How scoring works in 60 seconds

Fastest time wins in individual events. In team pursuit, three skaters draft together and the team is timed when the third skater crosses the line. Mass start is a points-based race with intermediate sprints and a final sprint.

If you're new to Speed Skating

Speed skating is a pure time trial on a 400-meter oval. Two skaters race in lanes but compete against the clock, not each other (except mass start and team pursuit). Races range from a 34-second 500m to a 13-minute 10,000m.

Speed Skating Schedule

Speed skating returns to the outdoors at the Ice Rink Piné in Baselga di Piné, Trentino — a dramatic shift from the indoor ovals that have hosted the event for decades. The program covers distances from 500m to 10,000m, plus mass start and team pursuit, running from Day 2 through the penultimate day.

Races are scheduled throughout the day in Baselga di Piné, with most sessions falling in the morning to early afternoon Italian time. That’s roughly 3:00 a.m.–8:00 a.m. ET / 12:00 a.m.–5:00 a.m. PT for American viewers. Wind and weather conditions could play a role in times and tactics — that’s the outdoor variable.

The Netherlands traditionally dominates this sport, but Erin Jackson (USA) is a gold-medal contender in the 500m after her Beijing 2022 victory. The mass start event on the final weekend is controlled chaos on ice.
