How scoring works in 60 seconds

Each skater receives a Technical Element Score (TES) based on jumps, spins, and steps, plus a Program Component Score (PCS) for skating skills, transitions, performance, and composition. The two scores combine for the total. Higher is better.

If you're new to Figure Skating

Figure skating blends athleticism and artistry on ice. Skaters perform jumps, spins, and choreographed sequences to music. Two scores — technical (difficulty) and program components (artistry) — determine the ranking.

Figure Skating Schedule

Figure skating is the marquee indoor sport of the Winter Olympics, and all events take place at the Milano Santa Giulia Arena. Competition begins early with the team event (around Days 2–4) and continues through the singles, pairs, and ice dance programs over the course of two weeks, typically wrapping up by Day 15.

Sessions are generally scheduled for the afternoon and evening in Milan, which puts them in the 8:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 a.m.–11:00 a.m. PT window — much more American-friendly than most sports. NBC will likely feature figure skating prominently in prime-time broadcasts.

Short programs and free skates are on separate days for each discipline, so you can follow one storyline at a time. The ice dance free dance and women’s free skate are traditionally the highest-rated sessions. Nathan Chen, if competing, will draw massive U.S. interest.
